What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

Choose the smallest container that holds your whole project in a single load, and judge that by the debris you expect rather than by the size of the building. Anyone asking what size dumpster do I need is usually weighing two risks: ordering too small and paying for a second haul, or ordering too large and paying for space that sits empty. This guide shows how to avoid both.

We deliver roll-off containers to Decatur, Mount Zion, Forsyth, Maroa, Warrensburg, Harristown and Macon, and the sizing questions are much the same in every town. Below are the questions to ask yourself, general starting points by project type, the restrictions that change a load, and what to have ready when you call (217) 615-5514. Exact sizes, pricing and timing depend on the job and are confirmed when you call.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

Start with the debris, not the container

Before you look at any size chart, write down what is actually leaving the property. A kitchen gut produces cabinets, countertops, flooring and drywall. A roof tear-off produces shingles and underlayment. A garage cleanout produces a mix of furniture, boxes and old equipment. Each of these fills a container differently, so a list of materials tells you more than a square-footage guess.

Next, split the list into bulky and dense. Bulky items such as furniture, branches and packaging take up room but are light for their volume. Dense items such as concrete, brick, roofing and tile fill a container's capacity by weight before they fill it by volume. If most of your list is dense, tell us on the call, because that changes which container makes sense.

General starting points by project

These are rough guides only, not specifications. Smaller containers suit tight sites and light jobs; larger ones suit whole-building work. Compare them on our sizes overview.

  • Single-room cleanout or small bathroom update: lean toward the smaller end of the range.
  • Garage, basement or attic cleanout: a mid-range container is a common starting point; see the garage cleanout checklist.
  • Kitchen remodel or flooring replacement across several rooms: mid-range to larger, depending on how much gets demolished.
  • Roof tear-off: driven by the roofer's scope and the number of layers; read the roofing rental guide.
  • Whole-house cleanout, estate cleanup or new construction: the larger end, sometimes more than one load.
  • Yard cleanup after storms or a landscape project: depends on how much brush is compacted versus loose.

Why heavy loads change the answer

Two projects can produce the same pile and need different containers. A pile of old couches and a pile of broken concrete may look similar in a photo, but the concrete is far heavier, and hauling limits exist for good reasons. When a load is mostly dense material, a smaller container is often the safer match, because filling a large one with heavy debris is not practical.

Mixed projects are where people get caught. A bathroom renovation might include light packaging and drywall along with tile and a cast-iron tub. If you tell us the heavy items up front, we can talk through whether to separate them or choose a container with that in mind. Whatever size is discussed, the details depend on the job and are confirmed when you call.

Items that never count toward the load

Some things should not be in your estimate at all, because they cannot go in a dumpster. Illinois EPA states that used tires have been banned from landfills since July 1, 1994, and that lead-acid motor vehicle batteries have been banned since September 1, 1990. Appliances that still have their components are also banned from landfills. Paint, chemicals and similar household hazardous waste do not belong in a container either.

Yard waste is a special case. Landscape waste has been banned from Illinois landfills since July 1, 1990, so tell us if branches and grass will be part of the load. Decatur residential customers also get unlimited weekly yard waste pickup from March 1 through December 15, which may cover small cleanups without a rental. For household hazardous waste, Illinois EPA holds free one-day collections on Saturdays, and Macon County Environmental Management can confirm local dates. Our list of restricted items goes into more detail.

Where the container will sit

A container that fits your project but not your site is the wrong container. Look at the driveway, the street frontage and any overhead lines or low branches, then think about where the truck needs to stand to set it down and pick it up. A tight driveway, a soft lawn or a shared access road may push you toward a different size or placement, so describe the approach when you call.

Street placement may need a city or county permit. Check with the local authority in your town before you book, and do not assume that a private driveway removes every rule. We do not quote permit fees, since they come from the city or county. Our guide to dumpster permits in Decatur lists the questions to put to them.

How size feeds into the quote

Container size is one of several things that shape what a rental costs. The type of debris, the delivery address, how long you expect to keep the container and the disposal requirements for your materials all play a part. We do not publish figures on this page, because the numbers depend on the job and are confirmed when you call.

Choosing the larger container just to be safe is not always the cheaper path, and choosing the smallest one and needing a second haul is not either. A realistic estimate of your debris, even a rough one, is the best way to keep the total in line. Our breakdown of cost factors in Decatur explains each factor without quoting prices.

A ten-minute sizing routine

  1. List the materials

Write down every category of debris, such as drywall, flooring, furniture, shingles or branches.

  2. Mark the heavy items

Circle anything dense, like concrete, brick, tile or roofing, since these affect which container works.

  3. Remove what cannot go in

Cross out tires, batteries, chemicals, paint and appliances that still have their components, and plan another route for them.

  4. Check the site

Note the driveway or street access, any overhead obstacles and whether a permit may apply.

  5. Call with the list

Share the list with us and we will recommend a size, with timing and pricing confirmed on the call.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Still deciding? Talk to Macon County Dumpster Co about your project.

Is it better to rent a bigger dumpster than I think I need?

Not automatically. A larger container can cost more and may be harder to place on a small driveway, while one that is too small can mean a second haul. A realistic list of your debris is the best guide. If you are truly between two sizes, tell us when you call and we will talk through the trade-offs for your project.

Can I mix different kinds of debris in one container?

Often yes, for ordinary household and renovation debris, but some materials are restricted and heavy items change what works. Tell us everything you plan to throw away when you call. We will let you know what should be kept out and whether any heavy material should be handled differently.

What if my project turns out bigger than expected?

Call us as soon as you see it happening, before the container is overfilled. Loads should stay within the container, not stacked above it. Depending on the job, we can discuss options such as another load. Details are confirmed when you call, so ask early rather than waiting for pickup day.

Do I need a permit for the size I choose?

Permits usually depend on where the container sits, not on its size. A container on a public street may need a city or county permit, so check with your local authority. If it stays on private property, still ask about local rules. We do not state permit fees because they come from the authority.
