What Cannot Go in a Dumpster in Decatur, IL?
Paint, solvents, other chemicals, used tires, vehicle batteries, asbestos and appliances that still have their components make up the core of what cannot go in a dumpster in Decatur. The list is shorter than most people fear, and the rest of a typical cleanout, renovation or roofing load is welcome. What matters is spotting the restricted items before the first bag goes in, because one wrong item in a container can mean delays and extra work for everyone. This guide covers each group, the Illinois rules behind it and what to do with items we cannot haul.
We are a local operator, and we would rather answer a quick question before delivery than sort out a mixed load afterward. Work through the sections below, set your restricted items aside, and call us on (217) 615-5514 or use the live chat on the website if anything on your pile is unclear.

Items that stay out of the container
Set these aside before you start loading and plan a separate disposal route for each:
- Paint, stains, solvents, thinners and household chemicals, including cans that are sealed or only partly used
- Used tires from cars, trailers, mowers or other equipment
- Vehicle batteries (lead-acid) and any other batteries
- Asbestos, or any material you suspect contains it, such as old insulation or flooring of uncertain age
- Appliances (white goods) that still have their components, such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners
- Fuel, motor oil, antifreeze and other flammable or automotive liquids
- Pesticides, pool chemicals and strong cleaning concentrates
Why the state draws these lines
Several of these items are restricted by Illinois itself. According to Illinois EPA, used tires were banned from landfills on July 1, 1994, lead-acid motor vehicle batteries on September 1, 1990, and white goods that have not had their components removed on July 1, 1994. Material from a dumpster is disposed of through facilities that follow rules like these, so we cannot overlook the items even when a customer is in a hurry. That is why we ask about them at booking instead of after delivery.
The same agency says it is illegal to open dump clean or general construction or demolition debris. That rule works in your favor. Shingles, drywall, lumber and similar debris belong in a permitted disposal stream, and a rented container is the practical way to get them there. If your project is mostly building debris, see our construction dumpster rentals.

Grass, branches and leaves need their own plan
Illinois EPA states that landscape waste has been banned from landfills since July 1, 1990. In practice, that means grass clippings, brush and branches should not be tossed in with a general cleanout, even though they seem harmless. If your job is mostly plant material, book it as a yard load through our yard waste disposal service and tell us up front what is in the pile. We confirm how it will be handled when you call.
Also check the city first. The City of Decatur says residential customers receive unlimited weekly yard waste pickup from March 1 through December 15. If your cleanup is small and falls inside those dates, the curb may already cover it. A container makes more sense when the volume is large, the timing falls outside that window, or the yard debris is part of a bigger project.

A sorting routine you can finish in an afternoon
Walk the property with a box
Check the garage shelves, shed, basement and the corners of the yard. Put every paint can, chemical bottle, battery, tire and suspect material into a box or a marked corner. Do not open or pour anything out.
Split off the loads that need separate handling
Pile plant material apart from household items. Keep roofing, concrete and heavy debris from a renovation apart from light bulky items. Mixed piles are harder to describe when you call.
Check the big appliances
Note every refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner. Do not cut into them or remove parts yourself. Ask us or the city how to handle them before they go near the container.
Load what is left
Everything else on your pile can usually go in. Place heavy items at the bottom, keep the load below the container's top edge, and call us with questions as they come up.
Where paint, chemicals and batteries go instead
Illinois EPA runs free one-day household hazardous waste collections, held on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Its page lists no permanent site in Decatur or Macon County. The permanent sites are in Naperville, Rockford, Chicago, Gurnee and Wood River, which are all a long drive from here. For local dates, check with Macon County Environmental Management. Keep products in their original containers, upright and away from heat until the day arrives.
Used tires and vehicle batteries have their own routes. Start by asking the shop or seller who supplied the replacement, then confirm any local option with the county. For suspected asbestos, do not break it up, bag it yourself or load it. Have it assessed by a qualified professional and follow the direction of the local authorities before any work disturbs it.

When the city's bulky pickup is enough
Not every unwanted item needs a container. The City of Decatur says basic residential service includes five separate bulky waste collections each year, with up to five bulky items in each. If you are clearing a couch, a mattress and a few pieces of furniture, that is a free option to use before you rent anything. Ask the city how it treats appliances and which items it takes.
A rental becomes the better choice when the volume goes past a handful of items. A full garage, a basement, a renovation or a tear-off will not fit within five items per collection. Our guide to garage and household cleanouts explains how to decide, and our sizing article helps you estimate the container for a larger job.

What a wrong item does to the job
A restricted item found in a load can mean it has to be taken out, a pickup gets delayed or the work is held up. Any added cost depends on the job and is confirmed when you call, so we cannot give a figure here. The simplest way to avoid it is to describe your pile at booking and keep the restricted items out from the start.
Placement is the other thing to settle early. A container on a street or public ground may need a city or county permit, and requirements differ by location. Read our article on permits for a dumpster in Decatur, then confirm with the local authority before delivery. Jobs in town are covered on our Decatur service page.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Still deciding? Talk to Macon County Dumpster Co about your project.
Can I put paint cans in a dumpster if the paint is old or dried out?
Paint is on our keep-out list, and that includes old and partly used cans. Do not assume a can is fine because it looks dry or has been sitting for years. Call us or ask Macon County Environmental Management about your specific cans. Keep them in their original containers until you know the right route.
Can I throw an old refrigerator or freezer into the container?
Not if it still has its components. Illinois bans white goods that have not had their components removed from landfills. Do not take parts out yourself. Ask us before delivery, and ask the City of Decatur or the county how appliances like these are handled locally.
Where can I take used tires and car batteries?
Both are banned from Illinois landfills, so they cannot go in our containers. Start by asking the shop or seller that supplied your replacement tires or battery, since they often handle the old ones. For other local options, contact Macon County Environmental Management and confirm before you load a vehicle.
Can I mix yard waste into a household cleanout?
It is better not to. Illinois has banned landscape waste from landfills since July 1, 1990, so grass, brush and branches are treated separately. Tell us when you book if your project has both kinds of material. Small amounts may also qualify for Decatur's weekly yard waste pickup between March 1 and December 15.
What if the item I need to remove is not on your list?
Call us at (217) 615-5514 or use the live chat before you load it. Describe what it is, what it contains and how much there is. We would rather confirm an item takes thirty seconds now than deal with a problem in a full container later.
